Mechanical watches should be professionally serviced every 4 to 6 years to maintain optimal accuracy and prevent wear on delicate components. During a full service, the movement is completely disassembled, cleaned, lubricated, and reassembled by a certified watchmaker. Quartz watches benefit from a battery change every 2 to 3 years, even if the watch appears to be running fine, to prevent battery leakage that can damage the movement.
Even if your watch is rated for deep water resistance, gaskets degrade over time due to temperature changes, UV exposure, and natural aging of the rubber seals. Have your water resistance tested annually, especially before any water activities. Avoid operating the crown or pushers while the watch is submerged, and always rinse your watch with fresh water after exposure to saltwater or chlorine to prevent corrosion of the case and bracelet.
Store your watches in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and strong magnetic fields. A quality watch box with individual cushions prevents scratches between timepieces. For automatic watches you wear infrequently, consider a watch winder to keep the movement running and lubricants evenly distributed. Clean metal bracelets periodically with a soft brush and lukewarm soapy water, taking care to dry thoroughly afterward.
