How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home

Three simple methods you can do with common household items. For best results, try at least two methods and compare.

String or Paper Method

  1. Cut a thin strip of paper or a piece of non-stretchy string about 6 inches long.
  2. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger you want to wear the ring on. Make sure it slides comfortably over your knuckle.
  3. Mark the point where the strip overlaps to form a complete circle.
  4. Lay the strip flat and measure the length from the end to your mark in millimeters.
  5. Match your measurement to the Inner Circumference column in the chart above.

Existing Ring Method

  1. Choose a ring that already fits the intended finger well.
  2. Place the ring on a flat surface over a ruler.
  3. Measure the inside diameter of the ring from one inner edge to the other in millimeters.
  4. Match your measurement to the Inner Diameter column in the chart above.

Printable Ring Sizer

  1. Download and print our ring sizer on standard letter paper (8.5 x 11 in).
  2. Important: Make sure your printer is set to "Actual Size" or 100% scale — do not use "Fit to Page."
  3. Cut out the ring sizer strip and wrap it around your finger.
  4. Thread the end through the slot and pull until snug. Read your size directly on the strip.

Pro Tips for Accurate Ring Sizing

Small details make a big difference. Follow these expert tips from our jewelers to get the most accurate ring size.

Measure at End of Day

Fingers are at their largest in the late afternoon and evening. Avoid measuring first thing in the morning when fingers tend to be slimmer.

Measure Multiple Times

Measure your finger 3 to 4 times on different days for the most consistent result. Your finger size can vary day to day.

Account for Knuckle Size

If your knuckle is significantly larger than the base of your finger, measure both. Choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably but fits snugly at the base.

Consider Band Width

Wider bands (over 6mm) fit more tightly than narrow bands. If you are choosing a wide band, go up half a size for a comfortable fit.

Temperature Matters

Cold weather causes fingers to shrink, while heat makes them swell. Measure at room temperature for the most accurate result.

When in Doubt, Go Up

If you are between two sizes, always choose the larger size. A ring can be resized down more easily than it can be sized up.

Secret Sizing for Surprise Proposals

  • Borrow a ring: Take a ring they already wear on that finger and bring it to us. We will measure it precisely and return it before they notice.
  • Ask friends or family: Enlist someone close to them to casually bring up ring sizes, or suggest they try on rings while out shopping together.
  • The soap trick: Press one of their rings gently into a bar of soap to leave an imprint. Bring the soap bar in and we can measure the impression.
  • Trace while they sleep: Carefully slide a ring off their finger and trace the inside on paper, or slide it onto your own finger and mark where it stops.
